In 1979, Antara Mali was born to parents who were deeply involved with artistic pursuits. She was raised by a theatre actress, a photographer, and a painter. Her father is Jagdish Mali and her grandfather is Shantanu Mali.

In her first few years of life, Antara Mali grew up in a family that was immersed in creative pursuits. She has a theatre actress for a mother, a photographer for a father, and a painter for a grandfather. The Telugu drama Prema Katha (1999) by Ram Gopal Verma marked her entry into the film industry. She worked with Verma multiple times over the next decade, and this film marked the beginning of a long association between the two.
The actress has not had a very prolific career so far, and not many of her films have been commercially successful, but her performances have generally been praised by critics. The actress has starred in films such as Naach (2004) and Road (2002). She was hailed for her iconic role in Main Madhuri Dixit Banna Chahti Hoon (2003), which was considered among her best roles.
